I just can't be doing with it

As a mountain biker of just six months' experience I can't stress just how much 'I'm loving it'. From beginner rides in the Peaks, scuttles around the dog-infested Tame valley paths in Stockport, to hacks around the Industrial Fells and a blast around Llandegla Forest, it's all been ace.

But there's one place that has just left me firstly horrified and now, after tackling it for a second time, frankly, bemused.

The place I dread to tread is the so-called Stoodley Pike Rock Garden.

This weekend's foray into this masochistic temple of doom started so well. A climb and blast down some rocky fireroads with plenty to occupy my Rockhopper and then a tricky rasp up to a pub that you really do want to clean.

Next it was around the reservoir and onto sandy tracts of singletrack cutting through the peat.

Then it all goes wrong for me and my hardtail. The first warning is a stepping stone path that gives your arse some jackhammer action as a little hors d'oeuvre for the main course.

Then, really?, surely?, it's just a series of rocky tussocks which ascend to a war monument.

The 'cheeky' path, is cheeky enough to disappear into a tumult of stones and rock every ten seconds so you're off and on like whore with a habit.

It's a form of torture which should surely be raised with the European Court of Human Rights. There's no good descents, unless you enjoy hurtling down dangerous five second drops once in a while.

May be the way back is better but then again, it's not; it's just more pain.

Thing is, if, as the somewhat muddy Smithy reckoned afterwards, biking is pain then Stoodley is heaven. But what's with the 'pain'? I'm replacing it with 'fun' for the reason I'm doing it.

Punk Rock Pater says he wants to do it without putting a foot down. I say that's just got to be impossible.

If there's one thing that's come out of it, it's that my codpiece got so much grief I'm looking at full bouncers. But I just can't see me ever wanting to do it on anything but a fucking monster truck.

So all you worshippers of this sacred place should know: The pagan god of yonder Stoodley doesn't exist.

Coming up the Rear

boon.jpg

Clint Boon agrees to Patron Saintronage of The IFB for the year 2006.
Queue screams of 'Boon Army, Boon Army' as we rag cheeky trails through sites of special scientific intrest whilst trying to take out ramblers.

Not so sure if Clint understands the implications of this patronage, especially after what happened last time.

Anyway, moving swiftly onwards, If you havent already we recommend tuning into Clints daytime radio show on 96.2 The Revolution 10am till 2pm. The new Mike Sweeney / Tony the Greek if you remember them. Especially on thursday the 5th jan as he's promised he'll give The IFB a shout.

We say a fond posthumous farewell to Fred Dibner as our outgoing Patron Saint. RIP.

A Calderdale Classic given the IFB makeover

With the Bronte Bridleway MBR Killer Loop off limits, a word from Phil Bombadil had prompted the IFB to investigate a notice by Bradford Council of a footpath upgrade near Oxenhope.
Not ones for the easy option the IFB posse decided to start at Blazing Saddles and revisit the entire classic loop of Oxenhope Moor. The result of this positive action by Bradford Council has remove the need to use the horrible tarmac down into Oxenhope and up Shaw and Lee lanes. It also opens up some excellent track from Top of Stones to Bodkin Lane.

It also opens up some excellent track from Top of Stones to Bodkin Lane.

With this anti clockwise tweak in place. We had no option but to return the next day and try it clockwise. After excluding the climb upto High Brown Knoll and passing Bog Eggs Edge instead. We were left will little option but to produce two routes, both of which are now available from Blazing Saddles.

But, remember Riding High Brown knoll when it's this wet is pretty stupid according to a local rider and I must agree. Save these for the summer months.

So here’s the info: BEN’S ALLOTMENT
Meet at start point SD990272 Blazing Saddles Hebden Bridge Calderdale (or SD988291 the National Trust car park at Hardcastle Crags)
Ride out at: Get an early start so you can enjoy a full day.

Calderdale Pikeys Block Bridleway

With all the mountain bikers in Calderdale, you'd think that old pikey trick of blocking the bridleway with a bedhead, would soon be rumbled. However, all that hardwork done to improve access for MTBers locally seams to have failed.

More pikey crap!

Happy New Year from the IFB : Industrial On One Inbred Onloan

Heres a present from the IFB to all you lurkers but soon to be believers in the way of the Industrial Fells...
No bike? No problem. We've built a loan bike up for anyone who wants to ride the fells for a taster. Just drop a post in the forum expressing an interest and date when you can get out and one of our operatives will be along to organise things.

And we have our first convert to the way of the fells
